About our Railroad
LAYOUT UPDATE!!!
Some serious (de)-construction has been happening to the layout. We are working towards an improvement of not only the layout, but for those who are familier with it, know how all aisles come to a dead end and this needs to be fixed. Over the next few weeks, there will be some new photos... maybe some before and after...
New!! Vendor Page
New!!
Video Page
The Newport Railroad club welcomes all. If you are in
the neighborhood, please stop by. If you wish to drop us a line:
The time period modeled is 1955. Steam and first generation diesel
motive power will be used. Modern day operations will also be possible.
The following railroads are represented on
the layout. In the near future, I will be making links to other web
sites such as their respective historical societies, etc. They currently
are blank. If you do choose to click a link, use your back
button to return to this page.
Our model railroad is based upon a real or prototypical railroad.
We base it upon the real cities, towns and structures along the real railroad.
We have had many visitors who share real-life stories about different places
we recreate with plaster, wood and paint.

Club History
The Greater East Area Model Railroad Club of Newport or more simply
known as the "Newport Club" is a non-profit educational corporation.
It was formed to build and operate a model railroad based on a midwest
prototype railroad, for historical, educational, public and member enjoyment.
The club was founded in 1981 through the efforts of Joe Maiden,
Ray
Daylida and Jim Bernier. Presently the club is composed
of approximately 20 members who volunteer their time, to build, operate
and display their authentic railroad models.
DCC - Take
a peek!!
We have had many questions regarding DCC. Take a look at what
it take to run our railroad. Hover the mouse over the component for
a quick explantion (right now works well with Internet Explorer)
Chicago, Saint Paul & Pacific
Railroad
The original railroad built by the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern,
then taken over by the Rock Island Railroad, now the present corporation
C. St. P. & P. Railroad. The original line from Chicago, Illinois
and St. Paul, MN to Watertown, SD was extended by the new corporation to
Lethbridge and Calgary, Canada. Connections with the Canadian Pacific
and Canadian National gives the C. St. P. & P. access to the west coast.
The portion modeled is in NW Iowa, from Estherville to Rock Rapids, and
SW Minnesota, lines to Worthington and Pipestone, also Sioux Falls SD.
Connections with the Union Pacific and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Railroads are simulated "off - stage".
The city of Newport, Newport Businessmen and the Greater East Area Model Railroad Club were instrumental in saving this historic 1906 Dispatchers Tower. Built by the Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road). The tower was used a Dispatchers Office for the Milwaukee, Rock Island and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroads. The Newport Tower was moved December 11, 1984 from the Milwaukee Railroad property to a site east of the model railroad club. It stands on the west side of the old Rock Island, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and CP Rail right-of-ways from the Twin Cities to Chicago. It is an excellent place to view present day prototype railroading from a piece of past railroad history.
Exterior restoration was 90% completed in 1992. The second floor will be restored to its original state. The ground floor will become a "mini-museum" of railroad history in the Newport and Twin Cities area. The tower will be open periodically, until the interior has been restored, at which time a regular schedule will be published. Recently, the tower has been a stop for the Newport Historical Society tour.
